The Tampa Bay Bucs Are Still in the Chase!

The Bucs are still in the chase for the NFC South Championship! As of this writing, the Bucs have won five straight and are tied with the Atlanta Falcons for the lead in the NFC South; both clubs have 8-5 records with three games left in the regular season.

If you weren’t tuned in for yesterday’s 16-11 thriller over Drew Brees and the Saints, it’s your loss! I enjoyed every minute of this one. Jameis, Doug Martin and wide-out Cameron Brate sparked the offense and the Buc’s D shined brightly, as it so often does; three interceptions of Drew Brees is a BFD and it really sealed the win on Sunday.

The three teams the Bucs will face in the closing weeks of the 2016 season are the NFC East leading Cowboys, then the Saints again and finally the always-dangerous Panthers.

Ol’ Bulldog is not going to say the division is a lock, but it’s great to see that they’ve got an excellent shot. Jameis Winston is all that and a bag of frickin’ chips and I’m quite sure the Bucs organization is still thinking that taking Jameis no. 1 overall two years ago was a damn good pick! He shone brightly in his rookie season and is doing quite well now in his sophomore outing. It does this long-time fan’s heart good and it’s just one more reason why the 2016 NFL season has been a good one.

The overall playoff picture will look much clearer after next week’s contests; for now I’m content that those of us who’ve followed the Bucs from  Day One are feeling good as we get into the last few weeks of the season.

And, if you also follow FSU, it’s very cool to note that place kicker Roberto Aguayo — another illustrious former Nole — has pretty much broken out of that freshman slump. Some fans have soured on Aguayo, as the organization used their 2nd round pick to get him, but I’m quite sure Roberto will have a long and good career in the NFL. Good to see these two FSU alumni tearing it up on the gridiron right here in the Sunshine State!

If you’re a Bucs fan too, and you missed it yesterday, here’s a link to the highlights. Well worth a look even if you did catch it in real time.

Slow and Low-The Best Damn Barbecue in Cocoa Beach

Note: this review of mine is taken from a visit in April of 2015 and originally appeared on a well-known travel site. My latest visit to this island of barbecue perfection was five days ago, and they’re still the best on the beach!

This top-shelf barbecue joint in Cocoa Beach has become my go-to spot when I want to get out-of-town for the weekend. If you’ve ever been to Slow ‘n Low, you know why.

I had the pulled-pork sandwich this time. On their delicious garlic bread, of course. I started with an order of the fried okra for an appetizer, as I often do. It was perfect and their mild horseradish sauce is just the right accent to compliment this often under-appreciated member of the vegetable family. Okra is often over-breaded or under-cooked, but they got it just right.

The green beans and garlic mashed potatoes make great sides with their tasty pork sandwich. I believe I’ve had all their sides over the years, and this is one of the things they do very well. Many barbecue joints have only three or four sides and tiny portions, but you won’t find that sort of thing at Slow ‘n Low.

I rarely get dessert here, as I almost never have room, but I enjoyed their Chocolate Peanut Butter pie on my last visit and went for it again. Yeah, it was scrumptious! My server brewed a fresh pot of coffee to go with this fine concoction; what more could a diner ask for?

Slow ‘n Low has a good variety of beers on tap, way more selection than most barbecue establishments, and a staff that consistently delivers good service. I’ve had their Combo Plate and the Blackened Prime Rib Sandwich many times and can recommend it all. Their patio is jammed with patrons most of the time, though there is also inside seating available. They usually feature live acoustic music on the patio Friday through Sunday nights. Tee shirts and ball caps are also on sale and yes, they do catering. They are also family-friendly and a thirty second drive away from the beach. Check out Slow ‘n Low the next time you’re in Brevard County.

One additional note from December 2016 visit: they’ve recently upgraded the TV’s in the bar, making their patio an excellent choice for sports fans who also like great chow!

John Glenn, Space Pioneer, Has Passed at 95

I did take note when Arnold Palmer passed back in September. Today the news is of another towering American icon: fighter pilot, Astronaut and former Senator John Glenn.

We boomers who came of age in the ’60s followed his every exploit and idolized this pioneering space traveler as much — quite possibly more — than any other American from that time in our history. My idols from boyhood were Mickey Mantle, Ethan Allen and John Glenn. That was my “holy trinity” of American heroes! And I stand by those choices today, though we’re many moons past the Friendship 7 mission…

John was 95 and saw — and created — so much amazing American history in his long and wonder-filled life. To read a good and thorough obit from Mr. Glenn’s hometown paper, The Columbus Dispatch, follow this link.

His wikipedia entry is also a good read for those of us who remember and loved this giant. That can be read here.

Godspeed, John Glenn.

Final Fave Foto: Meet My New Gull Friend

Ol’ Bulldog here has been known as the Gull Whisperer for a while now. I’m often amazed at how well they pose for me, and — as I’ve noted before on this blog — you never have to get them to sign a photo release.

This is a simple shot. I caught her up close. By the time I got her in my viewfinder, I’d had a beer or two and thought I’d rather have another brew than another photo. But I did catch a couple more good ones before I called it a day and wandered off in search of lunch.

Ben, beach, birds and brews; all the elements for a good beach outing!

Fave Fotos: More from This Week’s Beach Trip

Liked the last one, so here are a few others from that batch. There truly is nothing I’d rather do than head over to the shore. If you live in Florida and don’t get out there to enjoy the sun and surf pretty regularly, you might as well move to Wichita. Just sayin’!

Now shut down that damn computer, go out and get some sand between your toes!

Fave Fotos: Had Plenty o’ Fun at the Beach This Week

Made it out to the beach twice in this last week! How cool is that?! With a little luck and wise budgeting, I’ll be out there again in the very near future. Yay!

I’m featuring one of my fave fotos from this recent excursion. I like this one a lot.

I’ll be putting up one or two others soon; it was a good mini-vacation and the pix are only one reason why.

More to come…

PBS Story on the U.S.S. Oklahoma and Pearl Harbor Is Worth a Look

We marked the 76th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor yesterday. I saw an excellent PBS production focusing on the event from the point of view of the U.S.S. Oklahoma and her crew, specifically. It was certainly worth an hour of my day.

It piqued my interest because I’m a Navy vet and because I lived in Oklahoma for most of the late ’70s. And because I’m a serious history buff with a special interest in WW II. Anyhow, many reasons to like that show. Of course, I’ve never seen a PBS production that wasn’t well-worth my time.

It focused on two elements of the story of this most-infamous day in American history that would be new to most viewers: why the Oklahoma was the only vessel on “Battleship Row” to capsize after the attack and the fact that the remains of seven of her crew were identified and returned to their families in recent years.

If you have an interest in military history, especially the WW II era, you’d no doubt find this to be of interest. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing it yesterday on WUCF in real time. And you can stream it for the next seven weeks by following this link.

Mammoth Fossils Found at Site of LA Subway Dig

Bulldog is a science buff. Here’s a very cool story I “unearthed” on the ‘net this evening. And, yes, it’s one more reason why public transportation is a good thing! Check it out:

Bulldog Had Nothing to Say About Our Election

I’ve placed a high priority on covering important events here on da bulldog blog. So it may seem just a bit strange that I had nothing to say about the result of the recent Presidential election. Yeah, that was exactly one month ago today.

I did have quite a bit to say about this train wreck of an election in the social media universe. A lot.

But for whatever reason or reasons, I was loathe to write about it here. I’m aware of what some of the reasons were. I’m not sure I fully understand all the reasons why I chose not to blog about what is, without a doubt, the biggest event in our public life in this country in a very, very long time.

But as I end my silence on the subject of this year’s Presidential election, let me just make two or three points which effectively lay out my bottom line on this subject.

The first is that the election of Donald Trump to the nation’s highest office is a tragedy for America. If you’re rolling your eyes at that statement, just know that early on in this con man’s presidency, you’ll understand — as will all of us who didn’t drink the Kool Aide — that his elevation to POTUS will usher in dark days for us all.

The second point is that the things conservatives have been saying about our corporate life in the aftermath of the election are really comical. What I mean specifically are the appeals to those of us who cannot accept and will never accept this scum bag as our President to just close ranks behind Fearless Leader so we can heal our divisions and move on from here. You know, leave behind that politics-as-usual stuff, unite for the good of the country and make America great again! After all, that would be the patriotic thing to do, right?

Not happening. There are plenty of reasons why that’s so. One being that Herr Drumpf is so thoroughly unfit to hold the office that opposing him is not only NOT a bad thing, it should be seen as a sacred duty for Americans who love their country.

But speaking for me, the main reason is that I remember well the events of the last eight years. Yes, I remember the way Republicans, Tea Baggers and folks who proudly wear the conservative label behaved after the country elected Barack Obama as President. And, of course, he won in 2008 with a much larger margin than tRump.

I remember the demonstrations where effigies of President Obama were hanging by a noose. Or were burned.

I well remember the Tea Party rallies where people who hated our President carried photo shopped posters depicting him as a Witch Doctor with a bone through his nose. Yeah, remember when Obama orchestrated that complete government takeover of healthcare?

I remember elected officials who have called the President and the First Lady apes or monkeys or have forwarded cartoons depicting them and their children as primates, as something less-than-human. Then there’s that Moochelle Obama thing. Yeah, that kind of shit is hard to forget.

I could go on and on, but I won’t. Recalling this kind of mindless hatred is taxing on me spiritually; when I descend into that putrid cesspool of right wing, racist malevolence, it drains me of all serenity and good will toward my fellows.

So, how do we who see this hateful, deceitful and thoroughly unqualified cretin for who he is, move forward after this election? Well, as strange as it may seem, I’m going to model my behavior after my dear right-wing brothers. That’s appropriate. Especially since many of them have this annoying habit of holding themselves out as true patriots and fabulous role models, while suggesting that naive lefties like me are stupid–and that we hate our country, to boot!

Yes, I’m going to model my behavior after patriots like Ted Cruz, Joe Wilson, Mitch McConnell and birther-in-chief Donald J. Trump. Even though this goes completely against my laid-back nature, I’m going to do what these guys taught me to do. I make a solemn pledge today to show our new President exactly — and I mean exactly — the respect the Republicans and Tea Folk showed Barack Obama after his election.

Don the Con is not worthy to even set foot in the White House, much less to be sitting in the Oval Office.

Buckle up, America. It’s going to be a wild ride.

Yes, the Astronauts Do Get to Vote

On the list of really important stuff that you may not have been wondering about: do astronauts get to vote?

They most certainly do.

Of course, this intrepid crew member did have to take the time to request a ballot, but request it she did. And she made sure her vote got counted.

To view this very cool video about celestial balloting, just follow this link.
