Today is National Cabbage Day!

Today is National Cabbage Day!

Today is THEE DAY we celebrate this awesome vegetable! And I must say, that if there wasn’t a day for cabbage, there damn sure should have been!

In all seriousness, I do love cabbage. It’s one of my very faves. Love it a thousand ways…

To commemorate the day this time, I made cabbage, diced tomato, black olive and navy bean burritos. Well, I threw in some onion and green pepper, too. Fabulous!

Fish tacos are another way to get some cabbage in your belly! Too much trouble for me at home, but I’ll be chokin’ down some fish tacos in the very near future, for sure!

Hope you’re having a fine day and that you’re celebrating! Some awesome occasion!

Jimmy Hula’s. Fish Tacos. Beer. Good Crew.

Jimmy Hula’s. Fish Tacos. Beer. Good Crew.

I visited the Jimmy Hulu’s on Aloma Ave in Winter Park this week. Bottom line: I liked it. In a review a month or so ago of a different Winter Park eatery, I told the world that the fish tacos in that well-known and very popular spot were awful. I’m stickin’ to that.

But at Jimmy Hula’s, that fish dish I so ardently crave was good. Very good.

The recipe at JH’s is more conventional. Love the blackened fish, the cabbage and their version of Pico de Gallo. And the “special sauce”. Loved it all.

My draft Corona Light was cold and refreshing. The service was prompt and friendly.

The main point of this succinct review is that Jimmy Hula’s is a good spot for casual dining, especially if — like me — you’re into seafood, beer and eateries with a beach theme. I could almost hear the waves crashing onto the shore and smell the sea…

By the way, I did not opt for the patio area, but I loved the design and the way it’s carried off at Jimmy’s and will probably go that direction the next time I visit.

One closing note: this popular joint is also well-known for its burgers; I simply haven’t had a chance to sample one. But a return trip is definitely near the top of my fun list.

Winter Park Fish Company. Big Crowd. Mediocre Food.

Winter Park Fish Company. Big Crowd. Mediocre Food.

Finally had a chance to visit the Winter Park Fish Co. and I must say I was not impressed.

Whenever I get to a new Seafood spot, I have to order the Fish Tacos. I did and I was disappointed. I’ve sampled fish tacos from about a dozen different eateries, and liked ’em all. Struck out at WPFC.

Their approach to this usually can’t-fail dish is to scatter a ridiculous amount of cheddar cheese over the taco to finish it. I can’t imagine why. Didn’t like it. I was given a sample of some freshly-made chicken salad and crackers they had whipped up that day. That was tasty.

The service was about as good as the taco. In their defense, let me say that they were getting slammed at the time I was seated. But it was bad. Couldn’t get attention from my server no matter what I did and it took an eternity to pay my check and get out.

I hasten to add that this spot is very popular with folks in Winter Park. They have a great location and seem busy anytime I happen to pass by. The parking can be an issue, the lot is rather small.

I want to get back when I can and give them another try. I will if I can. And I’ll order something other than the fish tacos.
